Reviews

I have read Heidie's book (Palace Poets, volume I, Because You Asked) and enjoy the plain speaking and heartfelt poetry she writes. These poems are not just entertaining they are something you can relate to and get the feeling 'Hey, I could have written this, its just how I feel.' He one about losing her shadow was a reminder of an exact event in my childhood. She has a way of putting your feelings down just the way you want to hear them.

I was struck by the honesty of "Because You Asked" (Palace Poets, volume I), for that is the hallmark of a great poetress (my word for female poet). Mrs. Greenhaw explores the life of a housewife with thoughts and feeling that lays on you the burdens and joys this life encompasses. On a deeper level you can see the poet growing in each verse until she is on the verge of metamorphosing into a beautiful butterfly. This has the effect of leaving one anticipating her next poetic endeavor. I would recommend this book to anyone, be it man, woman or child for her writing is filled with a deep desire to live life and a sense of acceptance for the things she cannot change, but the strength to change and over come any obstacles that get in her way. "Because you Asked," is both an inspiration for those that feel trapped in their existence and a documentary on the humble life of a housewife with the desire to be all she can be.

Introduction

Dear Reader:

Heidi Greenhaw, the first Palace Poet, was discovered at ThoughtCafe.co.uk, a fantastic site for writers, created by the Becketts; Jonathan and Wendy. Her poem, The Day My Shadow Left, was so full of feeling that the "Palace", formerly a site to promote the works in Thomas Beal’s Diary of a Poet series, decided to begin publishing unknown poets, under the series titled Palace Poets. Heidi writes from a Christmas tree farm in Oregon, where she lives with husband, Steve, children, Tasha, Kayla, Ethan and Isaac, and her "nice acoustic Gibson, Epiphone" she named "Gabby".

Having begun to write in the second grade, her works show the shadows of extensive practice. This collection is a compilation of reminiscences of youth, intertwined with the realities motherhood, womanhood and wifely obligations and desires beget. We hope you find this collection of poems as invigorating as did we!

Heidi says she is "proud" to be the first Palace Poet and part of a project aimed at giving voice to the poets of today. Her vision is to put poetry before the eyes of youth, and we are sure each of her children will have their own poetry collections.

Snapshot

Take a snapshot.

Box me in.

Label me and cage me

In your dusty scrapbook.

You can’t keep me.

I’m always changing,

Always free.

You hate that about me.

I will have life

And lovers.

You will have a snapshot

Of someone

You never really knew.

Touching Earth

Fly baby, fly!

Take to the sky

Sail, with your heart open wide.

Be free, for me, and sail away

Kiss the sun and pierce the clouds.

Soar, like the birds of prey do.

And I will be here, always,

Touching the earth,

Looking up at you.
