Dear Reader:
It is 6:39 on Sunday morning, here at the “Palace”. This week included 51 hours of work in the dump truck, which included an additional three to four hours travel per day, and a karaoke show for my brother’s and my joint birthday party that ran from 6:00 to midnight last night, as well as printing copies of volume XIV of Palace Poets through the week and further preparations for the placing of the first retail “card rack”, with each Palace Poet’s volume next to a Note Card from it, as well as the Diary of a Poet series and Note Cards, and Stationery, and a Calendar sample, with special order cards for all. I have been up since 5:00 running the new copies of prior works for the Fellowship application that I was informed by phone Friday was submitted improperly, without enough copies and given a five day extension. The other computer is now running copies of a Palace Poets series volume for a poet’s stock (Thank each one of you who purchased extra copies, you have no idea how much help it is to receive a check in the mail, or how fulfilling it is to see more copies getting out there!!! J ) So, it would appear that all is well here at the “Palace”, as the world around us turns green and birds sing to the blooming of new flowers each day!
Though Jeri Garry is the only poet so far to submit a poem/picture combination for this newsletter, it still remains an option for all Palace Poets!
As an incentive to all poets, we now offer a small self-publishing kit so that any poet out there with a computer and a printer can get their works out into the public. Having done this on and off since 1986, I can vouch for the many inspiring and fulfilling aspects of handing out copies of your works to friends, family and even strangers, once even received an IM five or six years afterward, thanking me for such a “donation”. This can be a self-supporting venture with a bit of street selling, allowing one to cover their costs, and, of course, opening one’s self up for criticism, not always fun to accept, but usually quite helpful. This package is priced to barely cover costs and includes an easy to follow guide for making beautiful chapbooks from your desktop. It is highly recommended that you get other opinions on which of your works you include, as we are all own worst critics…
In order to “catch up” to the monthly release of the Palace Poets series, by late summer, we may release volumes as close as two weeks apart. This creates much stress on this end of the deal, so please reply to proof reception as early as you can! And if you know of any well practiced poets who might be interested in this small, but pleasurable, publication deal, send them our way!
And my deepest apologies for missing the April newsletter… :(
Tuesday evening…
Finished running off the twenty copies of Volume XIV of Palace Poets and ten poet copies, after a twelve hour day today. I guess the hundred at once is something I will have to work into, beginning with Volume I.
Wednesday morning, 3:00 A.M.
Making up signs for the mini-van, might as well advertise; if I’m gonna drive it around…
9:15 A.M.
Logan Airport, second round. Thought I might add a little to this and get the file ready for XVI (and XVII), to send to the other computer (Millennium Edition…can’t accept files from this laptop… :( )…
Just gave away another copy of Just Scribbled Words to the young woman in the guard shack, who promptly walked to my truck and asked me to sign it… It costs money to hand out books frequently, but I believe it is well worth the cost and effort!
Packaged a Palace Poet’s volume for New Zealand, eleven for Oregon, finished twenty copies plus stock for volume XIV, plus days that peaked with leaving the house at 4:45 A.M. and returning at 10:00 P.M. It has been quite hectic. The rack is ready but the accompanying paper work is just beginning; a contract, receipts, etc… Getting there…and learning lots in the process…
Be well! :)
Hope you are enjoying the stages of growth as we continue with great hope and anticipation! :)
Write several poems about topics that have priority in you local area. Take these poems to your newspaper’s office and see if they can use one. Because larger papers shy away from having poetry in them, in some areas, you may need to write about things that are pertinent to a more rural area near you, where the editor might be more apt to use such poetry. Positive verse is more likely to be received that negative. Get out there, research, write and meet some editors in your area. The world is full of little nooks and crannies that just might be an outlet for your particular type of writing!
