Dear Reader;

Welcome to another month here at the Palace!

It looks as if we are up and running again! Volume XVI, Paper Kite, of Palace Poets was released this past month. The final adjustments for volume XV, Dissecting The Invisible, were discussed last month and that was released earlier this month. Volume XVI,__________, is being released today. The rack of Chapbooks, Note Cards, Stationery, Calendar samples, People Say and special order cards was finally placed in the Bennngton Country Store. There was a lot of one time work as far as invoicing and contracting were concerned that kept delaying that placing. An advertisement column is being purchased so the possible customers from that area will know the offerings and purposes of Poetry Palace.

I have placed the poem written for my grandparents’ fiftieth anniversary as an example for the exercise this month. Please do not take it in any way as an attempt to proselyte, my grandfather was simply an ordained Baptist minister for more than sixty years, so it had to come up in the verse; the celebration took place in a church. One might think it was an easy exercise for me, being related and all, but most of it was taken from research, as my memories only included a portion of that time. The reading was my first and its attendance was over four hundred. The experience was quite a boost to my confidence.

Submissions of poetry for Palace Poets and People Say are still being requested. Only half the poet slots for 2004 are full at the present time. I am still trying to find a way to start a series for the Palace Poets that would allow for a bulkier, more adult nature of works, but time is limited on this end of the project. Another series the Palace hopes to begin in the future is one where the poets share the poems that helped them better themselves and their lives, along the lines of getting real, though not necessarily affirmation poetry only. Great hopes accompany the progress of this project as new plans are made and implemented.

I, again, would like to remind all the Palace Poets that the poem and picture/art option for the newsletter is open to all. Maybe you could go through your photo albums in search of poetic inspiration. Maybe you will even find the whole idea enticing. A scrapbook of your life with accompanying verse might be quite the heirloom to leave behind! :)

Poetry Exercise

Happy Anniversary

Remember sharing the hymnal

remember the one year wait

remember Franklin Delano

whose term was faltered by fate

Remember God's test with your firstborn

remember the strength it brought

remember next New York City

the mission at which you taught

Remember then little David

family was started again

did you see it in his cradle

he would teach so many men

Remember the little church

and cold winters in Maine

remember the blessing of twins

your testing was not in vain

Now two sons and a daughter

two cradles for John and June

did you even realize

they all would grow so soon

Remember the hardships of war

remember the prayer for the boys

watching the children unaware

in the yard playing with toys

Remember the sound of the bomb

had man out-stepped his bound

remember rationalizations

how long before reason was found

Remember again a son was born

your family completed with Paul

remember the ride to the west coast

the air of adventure in all

Remember the 'ware of TV

remember its purchase at last

remember the first man in space

how it happened so fast

Remember the cruelty of 'Nam

how father wished it were him

remember the nights on knees

how grace then seemed so slim

Remember the flourishing home

and the daughters then begot

remember the souls that were saved

pray for those that were not

Remember the growing store

how bountiful God can be

remember the marriage of last born

release with uncertainty

Remember the birth of grandchildren

remember the first signs of age

remember life is eternal

and Earth is just one page

Well now there are four generations

and reunions are far spread

all whom are affected

by the loving life you've led

Remember most of all

from the world you've seen

of the times of feasting

and famines, hunger lean

It is not just half a century

the blessing of above

but the lives of two people

lived through good and bad with love

The fiftieth anniversary of Earl Wilber and Minerva Galliger Beal

Submitting Poetry For Chapbook Consideration

Three or four poems will be plenty for a query. Poetry MUST be submitted with NO tabs, aligned left, in Arial ( other common fonts if you do not have Arial) font, with titles, in bold, on the first line of a page (or five spaces below the last line of the preceding poem), in one document. Poems in all CAPS will be deleted. Please do not have lines of over 40 characters (even those might have to be divided, and it would be far more comfortable if the poet did it before sending, probably on both sides of this adventure!) If this is too much work for you, that is fine; do not submit (I do not mean to sound cold, but the amount of work done here is ridiculous!). Please put "chapbook" in the subject of the email! :)

~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~  ~

We have a contract for single poetry submissions for People Say; a new volume will be released each year. If you have a poem that you think would be a great note card, please send it along with this contract to poet@poetrypalacegiftshop.biz. Please put “single submission” in the subject line.

Single Submission Contract

I have submitted this poem to be used in the note card catalog knowing that if used it cannot be sold or used elsewhere until it goes out of print. I understand that the catalog sales are for 'Palace' support and no royalties are paid, but that I will receive twenty-five cents for each note card purchased with my verse appearing on it. I understand that royalties are paid quarterly. I hereby agree to all Poetry Palace terms and understand Thomas Beal has all creative authority. The content of the poem cannot be changed without my permission, but the artwork, fonts etceteras to be used is dictated by the needs of Poetry Palace.

I _________________ agree to all the stipulations set forth by Poetry Palace.
